From 25 – 28th August, Lady McAlpine is hosting a fabulously eccentric weekend on behalf of The National Transport Trust in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support which will be just The Best, Maddest Vintage Festival in the country, at her home; Fawley Hill, once described by Country Life as the "most bonkers estate in Britain"!
Here at Fawley Hill we have a reputation for putting on Vintage transport events that include everything from Camels to Spitfires and everything in between. Ok – the boats are mostly on trailers: but people bring them. Our steam engine hauls passengers up the steepest standard gauge track in the world, fairground rides are powered by traction engines, tanks threaten “illegally” parked cars, camels race or just chat to visitors, horses tear round the ring with ancient fire engines, WW1 planes fly overhead, followed by Spitfires or Hurricanes or a dogfight with some nasty German plane. The place is littered with ancient cars, bikes, buses, commercial vehicles and a military encampment.
There are vintage, autojumble and antique stalls galore and local craftspeople making and selling. Great local food and drink of course, with The Crooked Billet Pub in the Big Top alongside the stage on which we have music from 11.00 a.m to 11.00 p.m. each day, with a Big Charity concert on Saturday night with “Elvis” on stage and VIP dinner tickets. All profits go to Macmillan Cancer Support so you will do good while you have fun.
We have a fun family Dog Show each day and on Monday, the Great Labrador Challenge when we try to get the greatest no. of Labs in one place and get recognition from the Guinness Book of Records.
We’ll be awash with famous faces who “may” pose for selfies or may just smile as they admire the vintage machinery – or they may be smiling at the wallabies or emus or the antelope watching from the safety of the park. There are over 600 animals out there, mostly rescued when zoos or wildlife parks could no longer house them.
Of course we have a VIP lounge alongside the arena for those who want to feel pampered while they watch the traction engines play games, the horses and camels strutting their stuff or the car and bike parades, and so much more. Take a look at the website for lots more info and then buy your tickets to help a good cause.
