Hello! Please introduce yourself:
Hello, I'm Kaga Chung, the Marketing Executive for Roseate Hotels and Resorts UK. I oversee the promotion of our distinctive properties: Roseate House London, The Roseate Reading, and The Roseate Villa Bath. These hotels offer a unique journey through England, from the vibrant cosmopolitan city of London to the historic and cultural richness of Reading, and the gateway to the Cotswolds in Bath.
Tell us a little more about what you do on the Great West Way:
As the marketing executive, I focus on curating experiences that connect our guests with England’s diverse cultural landscape. Whether it’s experiencing the global influences in London’s art and culinary scenes, exploring the historic gems of Reading, or enjoying the charming countryside near Bath, my role is to highlight the unique offerings of our hotels and their surrounding regions.
What do you love most about your job?
I love weaving together the distinct narratives of each location—London as a vibrant international hub of art, culture, and gastronomy; Bath as a gateway to the picturesque Cotswolds and the rich heritage of Somerset; and Reading as a historical link between the east and west of southern England, with its surprising depth of history and access to National Trust heritage sites.
What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me involves strategising with my team on marketing campaigns that highlight the unique aspects of each hotel and its surroundings. I spend time crafting content that showcases London’s never-ending stream of cultural events, Bath’s beautiful architecture and gardens, and the historical and cultural significance of Reading, all while ensuring our guests have an unforgettable stay.
Do you work with a wider team? If so, tell us a bit about them:
I collaborate with a talented team who share my passion for showcasing the best of England. From digital marketing to on-the-ground hospitality, our collective goal is to ensure that guests at Roseate Hotels experience the richness of England’s culture, from London’s lively art and food scene to Bath’s serene countryside retreats and Reading’s historical treasures.
What do you find inspiring day-to-day? What keeps the enthusiasm going?
I draw inspiration from the vibrancy of the locations our hotels are situated in. The cultural diversity of London, the serene beauty of the Cotswolds near Bath, and the rich history of Reading all fuel my enthusiasm. Seeing how these elements create a tapestry of experiences for our guests keeps me motivated every day.
Any interesting or funny anecdotes related to your role or your experiences with visitors that you can share?
One of my favourite memories is helping a guest at The Roseate Villa Bath who was fascinated by the countryside. They extended their stay to explore the Cotswolds and were thrilled by the tranquillity and beauty of the area. They even returned to share their favourite hidden spots, which we now recommend to other guests seeking similar experiences.
What does slow travel mean to you?
Slow travel is about taking the time to immerse oneself in the local culture and surroundings. Whether it’s wandering through the art galleries of London, enjoying a leisurely afternoon tea in the gardens of Bath, or exploring the historic villages around Reading, we encourage our guests to savour these experiences at their own pace.
What do you think makes the Great West Way special?
The route offers a blend of dynamic urban life, as seen in London’s bustling art and cultural scenes, and tranquil countryside escapes, such as the picturesque landscapes near Bath. Reading’s historic and cultural significance adds depth to the journey, making it more than just a route but an exploration of England’s rich and diverse heritage.
Do you have any insider tips or advice for travelers who want to experience the touring route ‘like a local’?
To experience the journey like a local, I suggest exploring London’s lesser-known art galleries and food markets, taking a scenic walk around the iconic heritage sites in Bath, and visiting the National Trust sites near Reading. Staying at our properties offers the perfect base for these explorations, blending modern luxury with local authenticity.
Describe your perfect adventure on the Great West Way:
I would spend a few days exploring London’s museums and galleries during the day, and evenings enjoying the vibrant nightlife in Soho. If I were on a road trip, I’d plan a day to explore Royal Berkshire—from the famous Windsor Castle and the hidden gem of Waltham Place, to the historic Englefield House and Garden, which transports you back to the 16th century. For experiencing the timeless charm of Bath, I’d begin with the city’s Georgian architecture, including the iconic Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey, and the Roman Baths. Bath’s unique blend of history, culture, and relaxation makes it an ideal destination for a leisurely day of exploration.
What’s your favourite thing to eat or drink along the touring route (can be a meal, a local delicacy or a favourite tipple)? Any cafes, restaurants or pubs you can recommend?
One of my favourites is the fine dining experience at The Reading Room of The Roseate Reading, where the fusion of locally sourced produce and contemporary European cuisine is exceptional. In Bath, don’t miss out on the famous Bath Bun at Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House—an iconic local delicacy that perfectly captures the city’s culinary heritage.
Are you a city, town or country person?
I’m drawn to the blend of all three—London’s unmatched vibrancy as an international city, Bath’s charming blend of history and countryside beauty, and Reading’s unique position as a bridge between the east and west. Each setting offers a different perspective on English life, and our hotels allow guests to experience this diversity firsthand.
If you could choose one must-visit attraction along the Great West Way, what would it be and why?
If I had to choose one must-visit attraction, it would be the Roman Baths in Bath. The site’s rich history and stunning architecture make it an essential stop. After exploring the Baths, retreating to The Roseate Villa Bath offers the perfect end to a day steeped in history, with a blend of modern comfort and classic elegance.
What do you think will surprise first-time visitors about the Great West Way? Any secret, lesser-visited spots you’d like to recommend?
First-time visitors to the area might be pleasantly surprised by the charming village of Sonning, located near Reading. Sonning offers a quintessentially English experience with its picturesque riverside setting along the Thames and historic architecture. Its scenic beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it an ideal escape from the busier tourist spots. This lesser-known destination often leaves a lasting impression, offering a slice of English countryside charm that’s truly special.
