Lots of people have been enjoying Netflix's hit show Bridgerton since it's first season back in 2020. But did you know that much of Bridgerton was filmed right here on the Great West Way? If you've been inspired and intrigued by the tv series' portrayal of extravagant Regency-period high society, take a look at the beautiful historic settings used as backdrops for the show from the Great West Way route. Incredible historic houses and charming cities like Bath and London from the whole length of the Great West Way were used to bring the Bridgerton story to life.
Bath
While most of the action of series one of Bridgerton takes place in Regency-era London, the Great West Way city of Bath stood in for the capital's streets for much of the filming. And it's easy to see why Bath was selected as the ideal filming destination. Bath boasts lots of beautiful Georgian buildings and elegant streets, which make walking around the city feel like you're immersed in your favourite period drama or Jane Austen novel. Bath landmarks like the Royal Crescent, Beauford Square and the Assembly Rooms as well as many of the city's historic streets appear in the background to the action throughout Bridgerton's first series.
Bridgerton also uses the Holburne Museum in Bath as a filming location. In day-to-day life this grand building is a public art gallery which was founded in 1882, and which today aims to bring the enjoyment of art to people of all ages, from every walk of life. But in the show, the building stands in for the home of the formidable Lady Danbury. Meanwhile, the exterior of No. 1 Royal Crescent - a Bath museum which demonstrates what life was like in the 18th century - becomes the home of the Featherington family.
London
Most of the action of Bridgerton takes place in London, as the high-society characters navigate the pitfalls and pleasures of spending 'the season' in Town. And while the streets of Bath were often used to represent London, it isn't surprising to find that some real London locations were also used in the filming of the series. London, located at the Eastern end of the Great West Way, retains a lot of historic buildings and impressively grand sites. London locations used in the shooting of Bridgerton include Rangers House in Greenwich, Lancaster House, Hackney Empire, Greenwich Park Rose Garden and the Queen’s House in Greenwich.
Hampton Court Palace
The exterior of the magnificent Hampton Court Palace is used in Bridgerton in place of St James's Palace, the residence of Queen Charlotte. Located on the river Thames and surrounded by swathes of stunning gardens and parkland, Hampton Court Palace is one of Britain’s most famous buildings. The Tudor palace really was at the centre of court and political life for two centuries - making it the ideal home for Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte!
More Bridgerton Filming Locations
Other locations along the Great West Way route used for filming Bridgerton include the grand expanses of Windsor Great Park as well as Wilton House, located just off the Great West Way route near Salisbury. Leigh Court - found just outside Bristol at the very Western end of the Great West Way route - was also used for many of Bridgerton's ball scenes.
