About

150 Years Historical Bridge Tour: One hour, accommodates groups of up to 30 people per guide.

Join our knowledgeable volunteer guides on a group tour of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. During your tour, you will learn about the bridge’s architecture and engineering history, spotlighting the best views and vistas of the picturesque Avon Gorge. Your guide will tell the story of the bridge’s design and build, introducing the life and works of the famous Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

You’ll also hear about daring feats of bravery and learn about how we’ve maintained this iconic structure over the past 150 years.

One Hour Hard Hat Tour: One hour, accommodates groups of up to 15 people per tour. Please note, this tour involves climbing a ladder.

Step Back in Time and Into the Bridge!

When construction of the Clifton Suspension Bridge began in 1831, the eyes of the world were on 23-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his bold plan to build the highest and longest bridge in the world. Many of the bridge’s secrets, like the vaulted chambers below the Leigh Woods Tower, were lost when he died before the bridge was completed.

Join one of our knowledgeable volunteer guides on an in-depth tour, where they will share how the influence of others shaped the design of Brunel’s bridge and how the young newcomer made a name for himself. You’ll learn all about the people who built the bridge and how it took until 2002 for the Vaults to be rediscovered.

Don a hard hat and descend into the Vaults to take a look for yourself.

Musuem: Recommended time 20 minutes, groups of approximately 30 people at a time (£1 per head group booking fee).

A visit to Bristol isn’t complete without a trip across the multi-award-winning Clifton Suspension Bridge. As well as being a sight-seeing must-see, the iconic bridge has a free Museum where tourists, families, and locals alike can learn when, how, and why Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s first bridge was built.

The welcoming and accessible Museum is run by a team of friendly volunteers who would love to share the secrets of Clifton Suspension Bridge’s history with you. Watch a film about the bridge’s construction, learn how suspension bridges work, discover unusual objects from our archival collection, and find out how the bridge is maintained today.
