The Great West Way is for the curious traveller who wants to explore further, delve deeper and uncover the essence of England, from bustling cities to charming villages, castles and monuments.
Day 1: Fly to London and start your journey along the Great West Way with a visit to Windsor Castle, the oldest inhabited castle in the world. Enter into the regal world of kings and queens on a tour round the majestic state apartments. 1x overnight stay in Reading.
Day 2: Discover the stately manor of Stonor, the 850-year-old home of the Stoner family. Explore its hallowed halls and uncover centuries-old art and treasures from around the globe. Next, gain insights into the traditional brewing techniques employed by the West Berkshire Brewery on a guided tour. End the day at the Merchant's House in Marlborough, a gloriously restored 17th Century house, which was built and renovated by a middle class silk merchant. Filled with old furnishings, acclaimed wall paintings and decorative features, the enchanting house sweeps you back to bygone days. 2x overnight stays in Swindon.
Day 3: Start the day with a visit to REME Museum which displays the proud history of the Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Discover the extensive collection of historic repair and recovery vehicles. Continue to the charming market village of Lacock where you can visit the Abbey and Fox Talbot Museum, which chronicles the history of photography. Following this visit the beautiful Bowood House and Gardens, a Grade I listed estate with vibrant gardens and a rich history. Finish the day at Avebury stone circle, a marvel of pre-historic Britain.
Day 4: Visit the historic Iford Manor and enjoy the beautiful Peto Garden, a colourful flowery paradise. Head over to Bath for lunch and a city tour including a visit to Bath Abbey, before enjoying some free time to explore the romantic city on your own. In the afternoon, visit the Jane Austen Centre and enjoy a cream tea in the Regency Tea Rooms. Continue to Bristol, your base for the night. 2x overnight stays in Bristol.
Day 5: Drive over the Clifton Suspension Bridge for an iconic morning view over Bristol. Continue to Berkeley Castle, an ancient fortress dating back to the 12th century. The atmospheric castle does not disappoint with its fascinating history. Afterwards, the hidden house and gardens of the Holfords of Westonbirt await. Exquisite formal terrace gardens and 25 acres of ornamental woodlands surround the house. On the way back, stop at Bristol Blue Glass for a glass blowing demonstration.
Day 6: In the morning visit the Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyards before heading to Bristol Airport for your flight home. Alternatively, visit the Bombay Sapphire Distillery in the morning before heading to London for your flight home.
